Ball Handling Drills for Control and Speed

Effective ball handling is essential for becoming a versatile player. Start each session with stationary drills to warm up and build foundational control. Begin with two-ball dribbling, where you dribble two basketballs simultaneously at waist height. Perform this drill for one minute, then switch to alternating dribbles for another minute. This improves coordination and strengthens both hands.

Progress to movement-based drills such as cone dribbling. Set up five cones in a straight line, spaced three feet apart. Dribble through the cones using crossovers, between-the-legs moves, and behind-the-back dribbles. Perform this drill at a moderate pace to focus on control, then increase your speed as you improve. Complete three sets, alternating which hand starts the drill each time.

Another key drill is the zigzag dribble. Start at one baseline and dribble diagonally to the opposite sideline while practicing crossovers, then switch directions. Focus on keeping the ball low and protecting it with your body. Repeat this drill across the court and back, aiming for five total repetitions. This will enhance your ability to handle defensive pressure during games.
